Complementary Medicine

Complementary medicine, also known as "Alternative" or "Holistic" medicine, has been popular in Europe for many years. Nearly half the physicians in Europe regularly refer their patients to complementary medicine specialists, especially when patients are suffering from chronic conditions. The principle behind complementary medicine is that a body's own innate healing powers are the best line of defense against illness. To that end, Alternative medicine specialists use remedies derived from all-natural plants and minerals.

Alternative medicine has three main components: Homeopathic medicines (also known as "remedies"), lifestyle modifications such as nutrition and exercise, and stress reduction techniques. Stress reduction can include everything from breathing exercises to meditation to simple fun and relaxation. The goal of combining all three components in complementary medicine is to strengthen and stimulate the body's immune system. For many people who suffer from recurring illnesses such as migraines, back pain, asthma, and arthritis, complementary medicine has brought relief where traditional treatments have failed.

Dr. Ronald W. Dushkin began studying the principles of Holistic medicine while still in medical school in the 1970s. He and a small number of other doctors were beginning to see the connection between diet, nutrition, stress, and the body's ability to fight disease. Recognizing the need for a national organization on Holistic medicine, Dr. Dushkin became a Charter Member of the American Holistic Medical Association in 1979. Over 500 doctors now belong to this respected organization.

Holistic medicine offers a safe, all-natural alternative to patients who have not gotten relief from traditional medical treatments. Homeopathic remedies tend to be significantly less expensive than prescription drugs, and they do not carry the same risk of side effects that traditional medicines do. If you have a recurring health problem and would like relief, please contact New York Alternative Medicine at (212) 582-1313, or 250 West 49th Street, NY, NY, 10019.
